The Record Shows, I Took the Blows

in College Life

There are some questions for which, no matter how random, you have a set response ready in case anyone ever asks. For example, if someone asks my favorite movie, I would immediately respond “Space Jam”. If someone inquired upon my favorite band, it would be “Vampire Weekend”, no question. And finally, if anyone was curious as to what song best describes my life, I would say Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” in a heartbeat.
See, I’m all about being unapologetically me. The way I act, the way I talk, the way I dress – I don’t mind standing out and being different. Yeah, I do have leggings with King Tut’s sarcophagus screen printed on them, and I bet you’re secretly jealous.
On a more serious note, the song represents how I live my life and make my choices. Sure, I’ve made some mistakes, but I don’t have any regrets. Every situation I’ve been in and everyone I’ve met has taught me something important and influenced me as a person. It’s an important aspect of life – we have to make the best choices we can make, but we can’t be afraid of mistakes either. I believe everything happens for a reason, but what happens is a direct result of what I do.  Either way, I’ve done my best with the cards I’ve been dealt in life, and I think I’ve had a pretty good time so far. And more importantly – I did it my way.
“My Way”, Frank Sinatra
And now, the end is here
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and ev’ry highway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way
I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried
I’ve had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way,
“Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way”
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!
