Snow, Snow, and Snow—this weather is not only for St. Louis, but also for most of the states in the middle part of the United States.

Last Thursday, we got a serious snow, the depth of the snow reached my knees, and I couldn’t walk easily even though I wore snow boots. It looks so dangerous to walk and drive. I didn’t have internet for 72 hours at my apartment after the snow. However, it was a blessing in disguise. My friend and I got a chance to make a snowman after it snowed. Even though the weather was so cold outside, I felt so excited to make a snowman with my friend because I’ve never made one. Not like in St. Louis, where there is a lot of snow in the winter, in my home country, Taiwan, we only have a snow on the highest mountain, it’s hard to touch snow and play it.

My friend and I made a hat for the snowman, we were just like kids. Also, we used a carrot and soybeans to be the snowman’s nose and eye. Isn’t it adorable? Actually, the cold weather made my friend’s and my hands freezing, but we still felt excited to make our snowman, since it was so much fun. After a half hour, we made a very cute snowman finally, but it looks like a puppy. We named him Carben ( Carrot+ Soybean). You might ask me why there is a lot of food on the snowman. Let me tell you, it’s because I’m a dietitian, and my classmate is becoming a dietitian, too. Does it make sense?

In the last minutes, we put our name on the snowman, to show it was made by us. I really like my first snowman, because it was my first time to make one, and I made it with my friend. I’m hoping you’ll like it.

By the way, we put our snowman (Carben) closer to Fontbonne, so don’t forget to say Hi to this snowman if you see him. Hoping you’ll have a good winter. Happy snowing!

As we all know, there were a couple snow days recently. I have never met a student or teacher that does not like snow days. For one, that means a day off. And secondly, snow is just so gorgeous to look at. (At least it is until it gets plowed to the sides of roads in massive, dirty piles.) When I was younger, in elementary and middle school, of course my snow days were spent outside. My brother and I would walk past only a few houses up the street to a church with a giant hill that we would sleigh-ride on (sadly, the hill has now been taken over by the church expansion). It was convenient because we could get there all by ourselves. Eventually, we would come back home and watch the movie Snow Day. You may not be familiar with it, but to me and my brother, it’s a classic (a very corny Nickelodeon movie, but classic).

However, my ways have changed since those days. Now, I prefer to use snow days as a catch-up day. I like to wrap myself in a cozy blanket and get ahead on some school work. This makes me feel so accomplished and ready to conquer the upcoming school days. Don’t worry, I do take breaks in between subjects and watch an episode of The Big Bang Theory, Project Runway, or American Idol (I’m not 100% a book worm). As you can see, my inner hermit characteristics come out during my most recent snow days.

One of the benefits of attending a college that leans heavy on the commuter side is that I don’t have to let go of the joys of a snow day. Yup, in case you haven’t read any of the other blogs, Fontbonne was graced with a day off last Thursday in honor of Snowpocalypse 2013. And even better for me, my practicum school and one class on Friday were cancelled as well, which meant that I was able to obtain the elusive 4 day weekend. Not gonna lie, I kicked back hardcore.

But continuing with the honesty: I still hate snow. HATE snow. I appreciate the fact that it allowed me 2 days off school, but I would have been just as happy with an unexpected 90 degree heat wave this weekend. So unlike many, many others at Fontbonne and its surrounding areas, I didn’t make any snowmen or snow angels this weekend, or go sledding, or have a snowball fight….I ain’t about that life. Nope, instead I did some work in the weight room and on the treadmill, I got ahead on my school assignments, and accomplished some lingering tasks that had gotten pushed to the side by my busy schedule. And I enjoyed it!! Because now, when MY kind of weather comes, I’ll know that I used my time wisely back when the snow covered the ground. And I’ll be out tanning in the meadow, suckas. I. CAN’T. WAIT.

Hello everyone!

Wow, isn’t it a beautiful day today? Aside from the scary ice and snow hanging around, I hope everyone is warm and safe out there.

It was pretty unexpected to have a day off, but at the same time, it was also expected. Anyways, I was able to sleep in a little more than usual because I’m always up early for school or for work. Earlier this week, I was so busy and was so caught up in things that I felt like I was going to go crazy. I slept pretty late and had to get up early which made me even more tense and tired than usual. Of course, I don’t usually let myself get agitated to the point of treating people in a negative way. As for my day off, I guess it was okay. I caught up with homework for the most part. Oh, it was also nice to just be home with the whole family.

Today, both of my morning classes were unexpectedly cancelled! I came to class and a few of my classmates were already there, but our instructor didn’t show up. After ten minutes from the start time, we all got up and left. During that time until my next class, I just posted flyers around campus for one of my student organizations. If you’re wondering, they were flyers for Fontbonne In Service and Humility (FISH)’s Open Meeting next Wednesday. If you like to get involved with volunteer opportunities, service trips to other cities/countries, and planning fun events, then please join us!

Now back to my other class. Again, my classmates and I were waiting before the class time but outside of the room. One of the security guards came by and told us that our instructor was stuck in his driveway (poor guy). He said that he probably won’t make it but didn’t clarify whether class would be cancelled or not. We were thinking Seriously? and asked if we should just wait. The security guard calls him then he went to talk with the biology department. After about five minutes, a woman came and asked us if we were BIO 108–we said “Yes”–she asked “What time does class start?”–we said “11:20″–she asked “What time is it now?”–we said “11:25″–then she said “Okay, go home.” So basically, I have no classes today (bummer). I still have work-study, so I had to come to school anyway.

Overall, enjoy your day and be safe. Don’t be too grumpy about classes being cancelled or not. I actually hope that my instructors are okay, too. Have a great weekend!

My first official college snow day is today! Although I only have one class today to be cancelled, but I still spent some of yesterday evening glued to the TV as a ten year old would waiting for snow cancellations. Campus wasn’t actually closed until 5:30 this morning, but what a great message to wake up to!

With my roommate gone for the weekend already (she was smart and left before the monstrous amount of snow came), I will use this chunk of free time to get ahead with my schoolwork and have a productive day. So far so good. Assignments that I will be given early next week are in the process of being completed. Most people take snow days as an excuse and opportunity to be lazy, but I shall use mine to get things done!

I absolutely love snow. It makes everything look so pristine and white. I would venture out to enjoy the snow, but it looks just too cold outside and would hinder my productivity. I’d rather stay in my toasty warm dorm room and watch the snow with a cup of hot cocoa. My only worry at the moment is getting around tomorrow. I originally thought we would get a few inches of snow, but it looks more like 6 inches at the moment and the freezing rain has yet to begin. I don’t know if my little VW Beetle will make it tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Until next week..

This past week was the easiest week of college I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Campus was shut down mid-day on Monday due to extreme weather conditions. Basically, there was a bunch of ice. It was like mother nature put St. Louis inside of a freezer and kept squirting us with a water bottle. Campus was also closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, no complaints here. I had two classes on Thursday, none on Friday. This may seem like a wasted week, but I learned a lot in my time off. For one, I was reminded that college is more than going to class. I was able to hang out with my neighbors during my days off and take advantage of this snowed in opportunity.

My neighbors recently graduated from college and reminded me that these are the days of our lives we need to take advantage of. We have a right to stay up late, to go on spontaneous road trips and to live the way we want to live. When we came into this University we signed a social contract with every graduate from Fontbonne University, declaring we would enjoy our years of college and milk the experience for everything it’s worth. As long as we get our school work done we can have fun and play. So let us Griffins walk with a little more spring in our step, sing in the shower, and let the weekend warrior in all of us out.

Well, the last week was probably the longest and laziest I’ve had this year. I went to class one day and it was over. The other days of the week I either didn’t have class (Friday) or they were canceled (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday). While it was a good time had by all (unless you had to get out on the road), I’m glad the snow days are over. It was a nice vacation, but I’m ready to get this semester going. After a full day of being ahead in my readings, and yet behind in my class discussions, I’m tired of being off track. One of my classes discussed the readings from the FIRST day of the semester. I read that two weeks ago! I don’t remember all that much about it! I don’t know exactly what my teachers want, but in all that time off, I was actually being productive. We don’t have to talk about pages 25-50 anymore. I get it. Please let the snow days be over Mr. Weatherman! I’d like to get this semester rolling, thank you.
