Our Mission

Fontbonne and its founding by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet work to further the common good we all share in our exchanging of values of friends and family and through service. Its hard to find another religious order that has been on the forefront and facilitator of social change outside the CSJs. I, coming from a public school background and wasn’t raised in a particularly religious household, found the work and message spread by Fontbonne and its founders to be universal. Our mission statement is:

“Fontbonne University, a Catholic institution sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, is committed to the common good through the daily pursuit of transformative education, inspiring students to become global citizens who think critically, act ethically and serve responsibly.”

We are to search out the most good for our community and be prepared to learn and act in a way that treats our neighbors with love and respect. One doesn’t have to share the same religious views to understand the CSJ’s message of continuous learning and possessing the gusto to better ourselves…together. Only together can we overcome the challenges to our community.

The Fontbonne Mission

The Fontbonne Mission is something that is always lurking in the shadows on campus. It is always present whether we know it or not.

To me, the Fontbonne Mission is perfectly aligned with what the President and educators promote on campus every day.

“Fontbonne University, a Catholic institution sponsored by theĀ Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, is committed to the common good through the daily pursuit of transformative education, inspiring students to become global citizens who think critically, act ethically and serve responsibly.”

They promote the charisms of the CSJ’s and encourage students to look beyond the Fontbonne community, beyond Saint Louis, beyond Missouri, and even beyond the United States to get a global perspective.

Fontbonne Mission is promoted throughout campus and it means so much to me to go to a University that “practices what it preaches.”

xoxo,

Claire

If by chance

It’s been awhile since I graced the pages here and had it not been for the necessary Blackboard tutorial, it might have been a little longer. Let me tell you why… Those of you who have done the tutorial already know all about the modules, but I was personally quite surprised with the second one that addressed the Sister’s of St. Joseph. I thought I was up on my Fontbonne history and knew all there was to know about the ladies who founded this great school, but I was so wrong! The fact that I didn’t know as much as I thought was humbling indeed. The thing that really got me, though, was the fact that all I didn’t know lead to a much deeper meaning behind me taking this journey at Fontbonne. “Serving the dear neighbor without distinction” has surely come to be my motto over this past year. As I dig deeper and learn more about my calling, I know that I have found a great foundation from which to branch. As I continue my studies at Fontbonne, I will seek not only to live that mission, but to learn more about the Sister of St. Joseph because I see much of them in me. It strengthens me to see all that they have accomplished and the many lives they touch. So if you by chance happen to have a moment when you are unsure or unsteady, remember our humble beginnings and rise up and be blessed!
