Try, Try, Try…

All of my friends know that I absolutely adore music and theatre. (Hence the reason I’m pursuing a theatre minor here at Fontbonne!) However, recently, I’ve become pretty tired of mainstream music. Don’t get me wrong – songs like Katy Perry’s “Roar” and The Wanted’s “Glad You Came” are catchy, but they don’t have a lot of substance. Up until last spring, I basically had two favorite artists: American Idol’s Adam Lambert (yep, I’m one of the biggest Glamberts you’re going to meet!) and country music’s Luke Bryan (whom I saw perform when he was a “nobody”). But last spring, I stumbled upon a third favorite artist: Sam Tsui.

I was working on homework at my computer, and I was, of course, listening to music on YouTube. I don’t even recall which song I was listening to, but one of Sam Tsui’s videos popped up in my “Recommended Videos” border. I clicked on it just out of curiosity, and I was hooked. Sam’s vocals are incredible. In his covers of mainstream music, he puts so much passion into the songs that the songs are completely refreshed, renewed, and organic. Around the same time that I found Sam Tsui’s videos online, my friend, Steph, found his videos as well. We are hooked. We were actually hoping to go to see Sam Tsui live this summer; however, I was really busy with work and beginning applications for grad school, and Steph ended up going home that weekend. I’m kind of sad we didn’t make it.

One song that really stands out to me now is Sam’s cover of “Try” by Pink. As the song goes, “Where there is desire there is gonna be a flame, and where there is a flame, someone’s bound to get burned. But just because it burns doesn’t mean you’re gonna die. You gotta get up and try, try, try…” Yes, this song, most literally taken, refers to romantic love and starting over after losing someone who was very near and dear. However, I believe that these lyrics can apply to all aspects of life. I may not get into the graduate program of my dreams. I may never find that perfect career. I may never win a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. But, if I don’t try, what’s the point of life? Yes, life can hurt at times, but we have to keep going and keep trying no matter what.

Check out Sam Tsui’s cover of “Try” here. (A word of warning – if you’re anything like me, you’ll quickly become addicted and will spend the next few months listening to each and every one of his covers and original songs. But trust me, it’s worth it.). :)
