Apple Picking

Happy Monday, Everyone! Did you all have a great weekend? It was too short, I know. Weekends always fly by.

This past weekend, I was able to enjoy some of the fall activities available near St. Louis. I went apple and pumpkin picking on Sunday at Eckert’s Farm in Millstadt, Illinois. It’s a little bit of a drive from St. Louis, but I promise it’s worth it.

If you’ve never been to Eckert’s, you should know that they have three farms in Illinois. Each farm includes berry and apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and Christmas tree fields (I had never been to one of their farms before, but I did my research before going). You can pick your own seasonal produce and pay by the pound. The Millstadt farm also has a petting zoo and rides; it’s geared more towards families with small children.

I do not have small children, but still had a lot of fun. My boyfriend and I picked apples and pumpkins, fed deer and camels, and browsed the country store. I had to restrain myself from buying five different flavors of jam and fruit spreads . . . but I did buy a bag of kettle corn. Which is almost gone now (oops).

Have you ever fed a camel?

It’s scary business.  They have huge lips that wiggle across your hand while they pick up carrots.  I do not recommend it if you have ticklish palms.

My palms are not squeamish, but my brain is. I was overly concerned about camel saliva. Thank goodness I carry hand sanitizer!

We also managed to find a pair of good-looking pumpkins! They are still intact, but I am planning some intricate carving for mine. That should be coming up soon. If you haven’t had the chance to do fall things like picking out a pumpkin, you still have time!  It’s a lot of fun, believe me.
