Last weekend marked a significant point for the Fontbonne University Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society. I assisted in chartering the organization to campus last year, and currently serve as circle President.

This year our circle received an immense honor by being selected to host one of the regional conferences around the nation. Working towards the conference since August, I was excited, to say the least, for the date to finally arrive.

An employee from the headquarters in Lexington came into town to run the conference the day before, and we were able to show him around Fontbonne and St. Louis. He even got to see Fontbonne play Webster in the division tournament and win!

The conference on Saturday was such a great experience. We had a large turnout from our circle, and it was beneficial for all!

FBUODK only has a few events left this semester, but the Drive-In Conference was definitely one of the highlights from this year!

Another Tapping Day is here! This has become an Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) tradition since the organization was founded at Fontbonne in the fall of 2013. ODK is a national honors leadership society. In order to be eligible to join, a student must be at least junior status, in the top third of his/her class in terms of GPA, and earn enough leadership points. These points are calculated based on various leadership roles held on other campus organizations or teams, scholarships and any other prestigious honors awarded, community service roles, etc. Like I mentioned previously, ODK is a national organization, and is still fairly new to FBU.

There is a process each semester, in which eligible and interested students submit applications to be a part of ODK. And Tapping Day is the day that these students find out that they have been accepted. On this day, current ODK members go around as a surprise to the soon-to-be members’ classrooms. We give a brief speech about what ODK is, and then congratulate the student with their achievement of being eligible to join Omicron Delta Kappa. They also receive a treat (cupcakes, cookies, candy, etc.), an ODK button, and invitation to the initiation ceremony. And, we might embarrass them a little by taking their picture.

Tapping Day is a great time for current and soon-to-be members. It’s exciting to see the Fontbonne ODK circle continue to grow. Also, baby blue ribbon is tied around campus trees, the sidewalks are chalked, and students are wearing blue attire (blue is the officially color of ODK).  Seeing this all around campus is fun. However, it is sad to think that this is my last semester at Fontbonne. Therefore, it is likely to be last semester participating in Tapping Day, even though I am a lifetime ODK member. At least I will leave knowing that the FBU ODK traditions that the founding students started will continue to live on.

As we like to say in Omicron Delta Kappa, the circle never ends. The Fontbonne University chapter of the national leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa expanded its circle by 43 new members. The second annual induction ceremony took place in Doerr Chapel on Saturday October 4, 2014. There was a nice reception afterwards, with cider, brownies, caramel apples, and kettle corn served. It was an absolutely beautiful fall morning and perfect day to celebrate. Many families joined the inductees, as well as people that are already FBUODK members. As the vice president of ODK, I thoroughly enjoyed speaking at the ceremony and mingling at the reception.

Personally, I am very proud of how quickly our FBUODK circle has grown. It is amazing to ponder the past year and think about all the accomplishments made in such a short amount of time. I am also proud of every individual that was just inducted. It takes a lot of dedication to school work and organizations in order to be invited into ODK. Every single new member has already achieved so much, and it’s exciting to know that this only the beginning.

Seeing Pink!

by Alumni Posts on October 2, 2014

in Campus Community

If you were on campus today, you would have seen pink all around! An Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) tradition is to host a “Lead by Example” event each semester. This is a campaign that changes each time, and we try to spread awareness about a worthy cause. First we promoted putting an end to texting and driving, and then a ban on the use of the R word.

Today, ODK kicked off the month of October and supported the cause to spread awareness about breast cancer. We had tables set up throughout the day in Ryan dining hall, the library, and the Griffin Grill. At the table, there was a pledge for people to sign, pamphlets with general information and prevention methods, and brochures promoting a charity fundraiser that will take place in Forest Park at the end of the month. Also, there were pink buttons and bracelets that people could walk away with, which showed that they pledged their support.

Many people that stopped by the table were brave enough to share their stories and how breast cancer has affected their family. They mentioned that they appreciate that ODK does things like this. It’s a great feeling to know that ODK can leave an impact with every “Lead by Example” event we host. I look forward to more in the future. We aren’t done making a difference yet!
