green

If I had to pick a favorite color, without a question, it would be green.

It’s also conveniently associated with the environment, and I love “going green.”

Fontbonne is becoming "greener" via our Southwest Hall garden!

A recent holiday that just occurred was St. Patrick’s Day…a holiday that is conveniently very green.

The Fontbonne HES Department had a Student Food Demo that was St. Patrick’s Day-themed, which I really enjoyed.

Fontbonne Students showing us how to make various food dishes.

I was pretty excited about it.

The mashed potatoes were probably my favorite. I'm a big fan of potatoes.

Utilizing technology in the kitchen!

We even had dessert!

I was excited to win an attendance prize! This peeler will definitely come in handy for my own personal cooking.

And now a few gems from the Dogtown St. Patrick’s Parade. (For those of you who aren’t familiar with different St. Louis neighborhoods, Dogtown is considered the traditionally Irish neighborhood.)

We were excited to arrive at the parade.

I enjoyed looking at everyone's festive attire.

I spy a Kermit the Frog.

Let the parade begin!

There was some singin'...

There was some smilin'...

Fancy Irish parade floats...

There was some Irish dancin' of course...

"The Brady Bunch" was even there. ;)

Just your neighborhood leprechaun strolling along...

People handing out beads like crazy!

This is my friend, Ahmed, experiencing a St. Patrick's Day parade for the first time, since he's from Iraq.

Me, Ahmed, and fellow Fontbonne blogger Marielle after the parade festivities.

Peace, Love, & Lots of Green.

The end of the semester is quickly approaching, and if you live on campus like me, you may already be packing things up in preparation for the long trek home. But wait, what’s that hiding in the back of your closet? A hairdryer that hasn’t really worked since March, but what can you do with it? Or what about the microwave that doesn’t cook food right and really isn’t worth hauling across the country in the back of your car? Do you have any outdated phones or ipods laying around unused?

Well, luckily enough, computers, DVDs, music players, speakers, printers, game consoles, refrigerators, blenders, microwaves, bread makers, hair dryers, dish washers, vacuum cleaners, irons, and pretty much any other electronic device or appliance you can think of can be sustainably recycled, creating less waste and protecting the environment. And it gets better! Fontbonne is providing you with the perfect opportunity to get rid of all your electronics and appliances that would normally get kicked to the curb.

Tuesday, May 8th from 11am-1pm in St. Joseph Hall parking lot, Fontbonne University will be providing a recycling collection for all these items and more, courtesy of Midwest Recycling Center. MRC is a certified electronics and appliance recycler, and they accept all kinds of things! Check out their website for more info: http://www.midwrc.net

Hope to see you there, and good luck with the rest of the semester!

Do you like to shop? I love to shop. Unfortunately, constantly buying new things and throwing out the old is not a very eco-friendly move. So can one be both an environmentalist and a shopaholic? Of course. The first step is getting rid of the things you no longer need or want – but just because you don’t want them doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t! So donate your old clothes, games, toys, electronics, furniture, etc. so they can find a happy new home, or find a recycling center that will accept items that are beyond repair. A quick Google search can work wonders for finding ways to recycle things.

Now for the fun part – buying more things! There are tons of antique markets, consignment shops, and second-hand stores near Fontbonne, and they are perfect for finding one of a kind items. One store I’d like to highlight is [RE]FRESH, which happens to be right across from another shopping mecca, the St. Louis Galleria. [RE]FRESH is a clothing store that benefits foster and adoptive care children. They accept clothing donations from the public, and sell them at a very reduced rate to these children, who don’t have much to spend on clothing. However, the public is also able to shop for clothing (also at very reasonable prices) and the proceeds go back to the Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition. They have a wide variety of clothing for men, women, and children, and the money goes to a great cause! So support the community and the environment – go shopping today!

It’s been a while since I threw in a plug for the Environmental Club, so let me update you on what’s been happening.

Here’s the scoop: the “Borrow A Bike” program at Fontbonne is officially up and running! We have 3 bikes – small, medium, and large – that were purchased from a local used bike shop. If you’re interested in renting one, simply head over to the Student Affairs office in Medaille, sign out a bike in exchange for your license or Student ID, and you’re off! We have helmets available as well, and you can borrow the bike for up to one week. I can’t wait to see this program take off, and I hope that it helps a lot of people! Biking is a fun, efficient, and eco-friendly way to travel, whether you’re dashing down to Schnucks to pick up some groceries or leisurely pedaling through Forest Park. Regardless of where you want to go, you should definitely consider borrowing a bike from Fontbonne to get there!

Well, it’s the second week back, and I hope everyone is getting into the swing of things. For me, that means Environmental Club! In honor of the Environmental Club’s “Make Your Own Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent” program on Thursday night, I’m going to leave you all with a few tips on how to make doing your laundry better for the environment! Don’t toss those jeans into the laundry after just one wear! Put hangers on a doorknob or curtain [...]

Let’s Go Terracycling!

by Marielle March 9, 2011

For those of you who don’t know, back in November, Fontbonne signed up to be a part of Terracycle. Terracycle is an “up-cycling” company whose mission is to take what normally is considered trash and turn it into something new. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill recycling, though – Terracycle is all about turning candy wrappers into [...]

Have an Eco-friendly Valentine’s Day!!

by Marielle February 15, 2011

By the time anyone reads this, most of the Valentine’s Day festivities will be over. However, I still wanted to talk a bit about last Thursday’s RHA/FAB sponsored Valentine’s Dinner and about having an environmentally friendly holiday. The dinner was a great time for everyone involved, but I was extra excited because the Environmental Club [...]
