fun

Okay, so it’s not Halloween quite yet…I know!  But if you’re not a celebrator of the holiday itself, it’s not a huge deal.  I prefer to think of it as part of the whole fall experience — a specific day to go all out and celebrate fall.  I am not a fan of haunted houses, witches, skeletons, ghosts, or any of the other holiday-specific traditions.  It’s not because I am scared of them, but as a Christian I just can’t say they are in line with my beliefs.  This is just my personal opinion…I think it’s totally fine if you have fun participating in these activities, especially if it’s an opportunity to be outside and enjoy the weather!

With that said, my previous Halloweens have included hayrides, bonfires, and…trick-or-treating with my horses!  Where I live is not conducive (or even possible) for trick-or-treating, unless you want to walk two miles and only visit three or four houses.  My church always had a really nice event when I was growing up called Trunk or Treat, where people would decorate the trunks of their cars with a theme and hand out candy, so I still had the classic experience of dressing up and having some Halloween fun.

Now that I’m older and have horses, though, I’ve changed up the game a little bit.  Last Halloween was the inaugural kick-off of “Equine Trick-or-Treating”, and the plan is to have an exciting second year to continue the tradition.  It’s the exact same concept as human trick-or-treating, except I don’t really dress up my horses (I could, though…hmm).  They have to perform a trick before they get their treat!  Blondie can smile, and Pearl will smile, kneel, bow, do the Spanish walk, count, and climb up on a rock or steps.  I think I’m going to make them Rice Krispie treats this year, but they’d be happy with anything — carrots, apples, marshmallows, safe fruits and vegetables, or special horse cookies and treats.  Yes, they’re a bit spoiled…but they deserve it. 🙂

Stay safe and enjoy the day, whatever your plans include.  (yes, it’s a regularly scheduled day at Fontbonne, but rumor has it there are multiple bowls of candy around campus…..just saying……)  Happy Halloween!

Halloween is one of my all-time favorite holidays!! I love decorating and dressing up in crazy costumes! Not to mention the spectacular fall treats! (I’m the pumpkin fiend all of you are getting sick of 😀 ) However, Halloween sets off the holiday season. And with the increased consumption of candy and cute, little ghost cookies, probably not on a good note… Here are some ways to have a hauntingly good time without the scary aftermath.

1. Get scared!

No, really! The University of Washington released a study that shows watching a 90-minute horror flick can burn an average of 113 calories! Here is a list of the exact numbers for the most popular Halloween flicks. So grab some friends and embrace that horror movie marathon! Remember: that doesn’t mean you can eat a whole bag of Halloween candy or it defeats the purpose. Bonus points: Go to a haunted house! Not only do you get scared, but you are also walking (or running). The RiverFront Times ranked the top 5 best haunted attractions in St. Louis.

2. Make You Own Halloween Treats

Honestly, no one really know what’s in all those Halloween candies and cookies from the store. Take out the guess work and make your own!! Put that Pinterest obsession to good use and search for DIY treats and snacks (believe me, there are hundreds!) Invite your friends over for some a movies (see #1) and baking Halloween Bash! Remind them that costumes ARE required!

3. Take the Little Ones Trick Or Treating

As much as I wish and hope, adults are still not allowed to trick or treat… However, that does not mean you can’t live vicariously through the little ghouls and gals that society will acceptingly pass out candy to. So grab your best Halloween costume (again, Pinterest is great if you need a last minute DIY costume), and stroll the neighborhood with your little nieces, nephews, or siblings. Just make sure you walk with them, don’t drive! You never know, you may get a few pieces of candy as well! 🙂

What is your favorite way to celebrate a healthy Halloween?

If you are into music and pop culture, you probably think of Justin Timberlake when you hear the initials J.T. However, before the modern J.T. was James Taylor. He was the original, considering he first rose to fame in the 1970s. He continues to be an outstanding singer, songwriter, and guitarist, and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to see him perform live.

The people that I went to the concert with were my mom, her best friend, and her husband. This is the same group that I went to the Paul McCartney concert with a couple years ago. They tend to be my buddies for the oldies concerts. I like a wide variety of modern music, but part of me has an old soul when it comes to my music taste. James Taylor has a very classic and soothing sound. It made for such a pleasant night. Also, it was actually nice weather, despite the fact that it was in the middle of summer in St. Louis. The show was at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, which is an outdoor theatre. We had lawn seats, which is something I had never experienced before. I just love seeing live shows, and this was another one I had looked forward to for a long time. And there are more coming up soon! Next are Miley Cyrus (which was postponed from April) and then One Direction (for the second time!). Like I said before, I listen to a variety of music styles, obviously. Bring on the summer shows!

It’s a Thursday night — what is there to do?
I feel like moving my hips and swaying my body to some music. I grab all of my friends and tell them to get ready. I feel the thrill and I am pumped up for the night. Club OZ here we come! I step in the club with my Fontbonne friends and all the heads turn. Everyone is jumping around dancing and having a jolly good time. No we aren’t drunk and no, we haven’t smoked. We are just having a blast off of our own high. I leave the club sweaty and tired.. Then reality hits, I HAVE CLASS IN THE MORNING!

Away from the Midwest

by Alumni Posts June 26, 2013

A few weeks ago I went to Colorado to visit my boyfriend and his family. I was there for two weeks, and it was great. I saw some sights that I have never seen before and some good movies. Unfortunately, like last year, there were some forest fires while I was there. That is the […]

by Alumni Posts June 6, 2013

I love traveling, and this summer I got a chance to go to one of my favorite places, Mexico! I went with my family, and this trip was kind of the final hurrah because we are all getting older and growing up. I got to spend 7 days in paradise, which was a great stress […]
