The Last Hoorah

in College Life

Spring 2015. My last semester here at Fontbonne. It’s a strange feeling, and I knew this was coming all along, but somehow I can’t quite believe it. I don’t want to believe it.

I think I’ve taken this semester as an opportunity to pack in everything I think I need to accomplish before graduation. This has been easier said than done, especially with the tinge of senioritis that accompanies this time of year. With classes, work, athletics, and student organizations, this semester has definitely become a juggling act.

While trying to balance it all, I’ve found that it’s most important to take time, even just a little, for oneself every now and then. I took a little “me time” with a friend last week and took a couple hours of the afternoon to try a café and bakery I have been admiring since last spring. One cookie, coffee, and muffin later and I was feeling like I could potentially become an expert juggler. Colleen’s Cookies may now become my spot for weekly breathers and a caffeine dose. The great thing about my new favorite spot is that it’s just a short drive from Fontbonne.

Here’s to making this semester worth every sleepless night, and a lot more time spent at Colleen’s.

“What classes are you taking next semester?” I am starting to hear that more and more. It is weird for me not to have any classes next semester due to finishing up this semester. So much is happening to me both in school and outside of school. Becoming the President of the Residential Hall Association and finishing up in December are just a few of the school changes. I get to drive again on the 19th of this month since I didn’t have anymore seizures, and I am adopting a dog. I wouldn’t be where I am at without Fontbonne. This place and the people here helped me succeed in life.

This is my last semester of my undergrad!

Nerves are kicking in.

I have mixed feelings about this, I am scared but also really excited. I am so much closer to the real world; it’s intimidating. That’s not going to stop me from enjoying my last semester at Fontbonne though. I have lots of plans this semester with multiple organizations and in my personal life.

Right now, I am taking my senior seminar class for advertising. It’s the real deal. To me, it’s a test to see if this is really what I should be doing with my life. So far, I think it is and will be forever.

Plans after FBU:

  1. Move out of my house in Chicago
  2. Go to Denver
  3. Take a year or so off of school to pay back Fontbonne and get a car.
  4. Go to Grad school
  5. Finally MOVE TO LA

Its going to be tough but totally worth it. Especially if I have family and friends supporting me!

I got confused just writing the title for this blog post, but it’s true: this is the last post I’ll be making for the first (blogging) week of a semester at Fontbonne!

Which, frankly, is crazy.

Then again, this semester will also be crazy, and I suspect I’ll be ready for the end when it comes.

(…Who am I kidding. I love Fontbonne, and I expect to be bawling when things start to wind down in May. I’m currently accepting donations for my Kleenex stash.)

The gen-ed Biology class I’ve successfully avoided for the past 3 years has now caught up with me, and Life Science is coming at me with a vengeance. (I knew I couldn’t evade it forever, but I thought I could at least try…) I’m also taking my last undergraduate Computer Science class, Operating Systems.

Then I’ve got two senior projects, one for my Applied Math major and one for my Computer Science major, which amounts to two 15-page papers and two “deliverables” besides the papers.

-For C.S., I’m making a device with a microcontroller that sits on top of a washing machine and sends a text message when the load is done.

-For Applied Math, I’m going to construct a mathematical model based on statistical study of the population migration out of Saint Louis City and into the County between 1950 and the present.

I’ll also be working as a Programming Intern at an area brewery, helping the Fontbonne IT department for a few hours a week, and doing a bit of cryptography research with the Computer Science department.

The semester has lots of work in store for me, but I consider myself really lucky: I get to take on some very neat things and work with some very neat people.

So as the semester is off and rolling, my final words of my last first blog of the semester are:

Good luck, everyone! Here we go!

Thanksgiving and Finals Week are coming!

by Alumni Posts November 25, 2013

The thanksgiving break is coming, but that also means that our finals week is coming. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays in the United States, because it means family gathering. It’s like the Lunar Chinese New Year in Taiwan. However, it’s sad that the final week of the semester is coming as well. Therefore, […]

I’m so in love with my African American Literature material

by Alumni Posts February 11, 2013

I’m enrolled in African American Literature this semester (my final semester) and I’m so in love with the reading material (Passing by Nella Larsen, works by Charles Chesnutt, Autobiography of Malcolm X.) I’ve decided to do my senior thesis on African American Women Writers of the 19th century. I was told that this will be […]
