Today is Springfest at Fontbonne. I spent most of today helping the fashion merchandising promotions class with their fashion show. I did odd jobs and helped dress models. Although I was backstage for most of the show, I think it was pretty amazing! I know I have a lot to live up to when I’m in the class next year!

After the fashion show I went and mingled with some of the incoming freshman for next year, and watched the Live Band Karaoke. After a brief dinner break, I’m about to go back for the concert tonight. Ryan Cabrera and Tyler Hilton are performing. I have never heard any of their music, but it will still be an experience!

It’s hard to believe that there’s only a couple more weeks left until summer. I have so much to do until then. It’s a little overwhelming. It will sure be nice when summer arrives and I don’t have to worry about homework or studying! I’m hoping for warm summer weather soon. I just have to make it until May 13th!

Thanks for reading..

Hello everyone! I am so excited to begin blogging again. For those of you who did not read last year, here’s a brief introduction.

I am in my second year at Fontbonne University and on my way to becoming a fashion merchandising major. Being here at Fontbonne has only increased and sparked my interest in fashion and the industry. I absolutely love it. Other little facts about me include my hobbies: reading, shopping, dancing, and adoring cats. Shopping is extremely convenient here in St. Louis with the Galleria and The Loop just minutes away, but due to my minuscule college student budget I have been forced to mainly do window shopping recently. I love to dance, and I am anxiously awaiting the tryouts for Fontbonne’s dance team, The Griffin Girls, in a couple weeks. I have danced all my life, aside from a break last year, and cannot wait to (hopefully) continue doing so this year. I am looking forward to being a part of something here at Fontbonne related to athletics. Adoring cats is another one of my lovely hobbies. I have two back at home and miss them every single day. Its hard for me not to sneak them back onto campus with me after a visit, but I will get my fill of feline attention next week here at school. The “Pet-a-Pup” event has returned and will be bringing dogs and a couple of cats to campus so that all students can de-stress with the help of animal interaction.

Speaking of stress, that brings me to my last hobby, reading. I have decided this year that I will make time at the end of each day to read what I choose to, not what is assigned in a class. I think it is important that students don’t get so wrapped up in their schoolwork that they don’t take any time for themselves. That is somewhat how last year went for me and I’m determined to de-stress and give myself a mental break before 6 or 7 hours of slumber. So far it has worked out great. I’ve been able to read books that are actually interesting to me, and it takes my mind off of anything that is bothering me that given day.

My piece of advice for this blog is to do what I’m attempting to do: Don’t get caught up in the stressful times of college 24/7. Take a minute, or thirty, to do something for yourself that you enjoy. That’s exactly what I’m doing and am loving it!

Thanks for reading!

Hello! My real name is Carlyn, but most people call me Carly. Either one is fine. This is my first year blogging for Fontbonne. Here’s a brief description of my life. You’ll learn much more about me and my quirkiness as the year progresses.

I am a sophomore majoring in fashion merchandising. The clubs that I’m involved in include Environmental Club, SHESA (Student Human Environmental Sciences Association), Fontbonne Student Ambassadors, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Worship Group. I am also an intern for Janelle Densberger, the director of student activities. For fun and exercise, I am signed up for a Zumba class. I also am interested in joining the Quidittich team. How awesome would that be?!

I chose to go to Fontbonne for many reasons. One, they offered my desired major. It has been a hobby of mine to put outfits together since I was 11 years old. I still can’t believe I get to study that kind of stuff and the fashion industry now at school! I have worked at Gordmans since my sophomore year of high school and just have a blast doing the displays and mannequins there. Anyway, I also chose Fontbonne because of its location. I love that I can live on campus and experience the dorm/college life and still be close to my family in St. Peters, Missouri. Plus, St. Louis has some awesome places to shop! Additionally, I love that Fontbonne is very small and a Catholic school. It’s great to personally get to know your teachers. Last, but not least, my grandma attended Fontbonne in the 1950s, so I have a family connection here.

I think I’ve done enough blabbing for now. I’ll save some more exciting stories for later!

Well, this is it. There’s just four weeks left of my first year of college! I can hardly believe it. This past week was quite a busy one, with final projects being introduced and other class related things to do. SHESA (Student Human Environmental Sciences Association) is sponsoring Denim Day in a couple of weeks, and I was busy making crafts out of denim we plan on selling for donations on April 26th.

This week I did something that I haven’t done all year long. I stayed on campus Friday night. Normally, I go back home every weekend, but Saturday afternoon I attended a lecture at Washington University, and with high gas prices driving home and back didn’t seem like the right choice. It was extremely odd being in the dorms when I would normally be at home, but change is good.

The lecture I attended Saturday was titled, “Is Fashion Art?” and Valerie Steele spoke. According to my adviser, it was a “don’t miss opportunity”. I am extremely glad I went. Steele does not think fashion is art, but her lecture was very insightful about the relationship between fashion and art.

With summer on its way, Cardinals baseball has begun, and I must say I am very proud of the Redbirds so far! I look forward to going to a game at Busch Stadium in the next few weeks. I just hope no one else gets hurt. This week I watched all the games, but was disappointed the weather was so dreary for Opening Day.

I look forward to my last weeks at Fontbonne until the fall. We’ll see what next week has in store for me!

This week I learned a lesson: If you have time over Spring Break to work on assignments for college, don’t be lazy and do them! My Spring Break was wonderful. It was nice and relaxing. I did absolutely nothing, but I should have used my week off to get ahead in my school work.

That said, this week was completely stressful. I was working on homework for hours on end and getting tired of it! Had I not been so lazy over break, my week would have been easy, but I was, and as a result, forced to complete about 3 weeks of work for an online class in about two and a half days. I’m glad to say all that needed to be is completed, and I have finished studying for the test I have tomorrow. All the homework from this week really stressed me out, but tonight I ended the week by having some fun.

My roommate and I went to GLOW Fashion Show at Windows on Washington in St. Louis. Another perk of going to Fontbonne is the fabulous events you have the opportunity of attending! It was a beautiful venue full of beautiful people and apparel. I had tons of fun seeing what boutiques and local designers have in their collections. The event was sold out, so there was a large amount of people there, even a contestant from Project Runway! Needless to say, this was the highlight of my week and so much fun!

For now the stress of the week is over. Well, except for that test tomorrow…

This week at Fontbonne was full of spring and all things that accompany the week before spring break: tests, excitement, homework, packing, and a whole lot more. Not surprisingly, this week went by fairly slowly, but that’s alright because my spring break begins tomorrow! I have just finished packing for break, and I have to say I have really overpacked. My suitcase, or suitcases, make me look as if I’m leaving for three months, not ten days. But what can I say, a fashion merchandising major has got to have her clothes.

I had a major test in one of my fashion merchandising classes this week, and I actually enjoyed studying for it. Normally studying is just a hassle, and I do it because I have to, but this class and my others involving fashion are so enjoyable that I don’t mind studying. I’m thankful that I chose the major I did because I’m having the greatest time here at Fontbonne studying fashion merchandising. I always knew that I wanted to be working in the fashion industry in some way, and majoring in fashion merchandising gives me so many opportunities and career options to choose from. I can’t wait to experience my next few years here and see what a future in fashion holds for me!

Although I am not going anywhere but home for break, I am looking forward to it. I hope to relax, watch spring training games on television, and spend time with my family, including my three cats! That’s the only thing I hate about living in the dorms. No cats, only fish. Anyway, I hope all you readers out there enjoy this nice weather and a break if you get one. I sure will try and enjoy mine!

One of the most important decisions you can make in your life is what you decide to study in college. This may be what one would think at the ripe old age of seventeen or eighteen, but in reality, it isn’t. Nevertheless, it is a choice that has to be made, and mine was particularly easy.

I decided to major in Fashion Merchandising because I love fashion, and I know if my career relates in any way to fashion, I would be happy. There are a numerous amount of career opportunities and different avenues offered with a major in Fashion Merchandising. Fashion Merchandising is so much more than fashion design, and that’s what I love about it. As my Fashion Industry instructor Rogene Nelsen said this morning, “Fashion is a business.”

This past week has been one of great importance for Fashion Merchandising majors. It’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City! This is a week where designers, new and old, can show their designs for the upcoming season, in this case, Fall 2012. Today is the last day for designers to show their Fall 2012 collections on the runway for buyers, celebrities, and other influential people in the business. For the past week, I have been reviewing what’s happened on the runway. Yesterday I watched Michael Kors’s runway show, and I have to say I am really impressed! Kors showed a lot of pieces in fur, leather, and lace. Shades of red, black, beige, gold, and silver dominated the runway. My favorite part of the 12 minute show were the gowns shown at the end. I would highly recommend checking them out online! Kors has planned to expand his business and add stores here in the United States, as well as in Europe and Japan, so this could be a big year for him in the fashion industry.

Being a Fashion Merchandising major at Fontbonne University has allowed me to have access to fashion related websites, publications, and information I would not get elsewhere. I am extremely grateful for the program, especially during Fashion Week. Fashion Merchandising combined with Fontbonne University is the best combination for me in my life at this moment. Fashion is incorporated into the university’s classes to form something as perfect as incorporating peanut butter with jelly!

Greetings Griffins! I’m very excited to be a blogger for Fontbonne University. Since this is my 1st post, I should introduce myself. My name is Michelle and I’m a senior, but this is my 2nd year at Fontbonne. My major is in Fashion Merchandising and I absolutely love it!

I just recently worked in a team with 2 other fashion majors to create a display for our Visual Merchandising class. It took us approximately 5 hours (2.5 class periods) and a lot of hard work and dedication. We successfully accomplished our initial vision and I am very satisfied with the results!

In a nutshell, the story behind the display is… Here is a girl in the fitting room of a fashion forward teen [resale] store, and she found the perfect dress. I love how all the colors we chose played out. It was not an easy task. We were assigned the largest display (4x the size of the others). There was a lot of trial and error and running back and forth. Nevertheless, I’m very proud of the display!

If you have time, please stop by Medaille Hall, 1st floor, to check out our display. It is across from the vending machines. And also check out my other classmates’ displays too!

I just want to be comfortable when I am here and not worry about impressing anyone (trust me, I’m not trying to). I like to be comfortable, and I doesn’t bother me of what people think of what I am wearing that day. If I feel like being a slob and chill, then I will be, if I feel like dressing up, then I will. It all depends how I feel that day and if I am going to work or not.

There is little exception when it comes to wearing brown and black. I can handle black and tan, but black and brown together is never a good combination! I have to agree with Sarah on this one. I don’t know if it’s my obsession with TLC’s show What Not to Wear, but when I see someone wearing a brown belt with black shoes, I cringe. I went shopping at Target with my best friend who shares my opinion on brown and black, and we found a black shirt with a brown collar and buttons. Luckily, I haven’t seen any Fontbonne students sporting this, to me awful trend. Because I have gone to schools all my life where a uniform was a must, it is different to go to class where people wear whatever. I have been pretty impressed with the outfits I have seen people wear on campus. But there have been a couple of times I thought to myself, “Really?” Guys wearing tight jeans and girls wearing leggings with Ugg boots aren’t my cup of tea, but if you wear these things and are confident and you like it, go for it.

Would your outfit impress Libby? Do you want to be a style maven? Maybe Fontbonne’s Fashion Merchandising Major is for you!
