DIY

Is everyone as sick of all this rain as I am? I think it rained every single day last week, which is very unusual since it’s summer! This week looks a little more promising though! Temperatures look to be in the 80’s all week with some rain possibly Friday, but hopefully it just passes over. While the rainy week wasn’t my favorite, it did allow me to get my crafting on!

Like I told you in a previous post, I love anything DIY and that’s what my summer would mainly consist of. I decided to paint a canvas for my best friend from high school, Ruth. I had no clue what to paint, but after some long hours on Pinterest 🙂 I came up with my idea. First, I painted navy stripes onto the canvas. I was able to get clean lines by putting tape to separate the sections.

After I made the stripes, I then painted a quote in a gold metallic color. The quote I chose was “You are capable of amazing things.” It just reminded me of my best friend! I had to go over the words a couple times to make the gold really pop!

IMG_8874After I painted the quote, I felt like the canvas needed a little something extra. I decided to paint a flower in the top left corner and it was actually really easy to make. I used some different shades of pink to create a cute flower with some green leaves attached.

Once I painted the flower, my masterpiece was complete! I was really happy with the way it turned out and can’t wait to give it to Ruth! I think she will love it! I hope I inspired you to create a masterpiece of your own!

One of my favorite things to do over the summer is craft! I absolutely love creating new projects! It’s a great stress reliever and something I don’t get to do much of during the school year. I get a lot of my ideas from Pinterest (follow me on Pinterest @trbpurple), but sometimes I’ll come up with them on my own.

I came up with my first project of the summer on my own. I decided to make a fashion photo collage! It was super simple and easy and maybe I can convince you to make one too!

FullSizeRenderAll of the photos I used came from some old Nordstrom catalogs that  were lying around but I didn’t want anymore. I clipped out a few of my favorite pictures and started arranging them on some white paper. It   took a little bit of figuring out what picture looked best where and moving some  things around before I found the best layout. After I arranged the  pictures, I glued them onto the paper and ta da! My first DIY of the summer was complete! It took me maybe an hour or two to  do and I think the end result was a success! I was happy with the way it turned out and I can’t wait to hang it up in my room! (End result pictured.)

I hope you enjoyed this DIY post and look forward to more of them because more are sure to appear over the summer!

Decorating my dorm room was one of my favorite parts of moving in! It can be difficult squeezing all of your belongings into such a small area, but it is possible! This is my second year living in the dorms and I have found what works best for me in the small space. I think it is important to make your room as comfortable as possible, as you will be living there for about nine months. I would suggest bringing plenty of pictures, a cozy blanket, your favorite quotes/ images/ posters, and maybe a rug if your room isn’t carpeted. I have found those large plastic three-drawer organizers very useful because they can hold a lot of things and are easily able to be tucked away. I even put some colored paper in front of the clear part of the drawers to give it some personalization!

Here is a list of things that I think are important for anyone living in small space:

-Command Hooks: actual hooks and the velcro ones!

-Push pins (for a bulletin board if your room has one)

-String lights

-A three-drawer organizer

-An ottoman (the hollow ones can hold so many things and they make for a great foot rest!)

-Plenty of picture frames with pictures of friends and family

-Pillows, pillows, pillows!

-Bins (bins and containers of all shapes, sizes and colors are wonderful for holding things such as: lotions, paper/ notebooks, snacks, stationery, etc!)

Below are a few pictures of my drawer organizer, bins, and entire room!

I am very crafty and creative; I enjoy DIY projects and trying new things regularly. The most recent project I did was a mosaic on my room! Since I live in Cotta Hall, I am not allowed to paint or permanently change the aspect of my room, therefore I had to be really creative when I realized I wanted to do a mosaic.

The first thing you have to sort out is materials; mosaic tiles require a lot of work, they are pricey and more importantly they are permanent. The substitute I came up with is cardstock and paper, which is easy to work with and you can stick it to the wall with masking tape. Easy to apply and easy to remove!

The next step was choosing a design; some people require a plan before attempting this but I like to go with the flow! Thus I just gathered my materials and started with a single dot on the center of my wall and then added the next dots around it, and so on.

My biggest advice when doing DIY’s is to have an open mind! You never actually know how something is going to turn out if you have never tried it before, and DIY is about enjoying the experience and having fun!

I have attached a picture of the mosaic so you can see how it looks, it is about 40×40 inches. I spent about $15 in paper, masking tape and a hole punch!

Happy DIYing!

Home Away From Home

by Fontbonne University October 2, 2014

One of my favorite things about moving into a dorm at the beginning of the school year is the fact that I get a new space to decorate! It’s something I can make my own! I love to take a bland and boring dorm room with white walls and white floors and turn it into […]

Staying Organized

by Alumni Posts October 1, 2014

If you’re anything like me, you start the semester with the best of intentions.  You vow to stay perfectly organized and file everything in its appropriate place before you go to sleep at night… and then September rolls around, and you’re back to your unorganized, I’ll-deal-with-it-later habits. If you know anything about Pinterest, it’s a […]
