Cardinals

When somebody is talking about St. Louis, what comes to your mind?

For me, the answers always are the Gateway Arch and the St. Louis Cardinals.

The St. Louis Cardinals are a well-known baseball team based in St. Louis, Missouri. Before studying in St. Louis, I only watched Cardinals on TV when they won the World Series. But, now, I am so lucky I can go to downtown St. Louis and watch a Cardinal’s game in Busch Stadium.

October is an important month for baseball game. Everyone pays attention to watch the game on TV, because it’s the season for gaining the World Series (WS) championship.

Cardinals won for the NLDS (Nation league division series) last week, the miracle for the “Angry Birds” happened again. Let’s celebrate it.

Fontbonne’s students are so lucky because student activities provided the chance to buy special price tickets to watch Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The student activities department also offered students chances to watch the Cardinals’ game on campus together, and gave students snakes and pizza during the games. Therefore, students wouldn’t miss any chance to cheer for our excellent Cardinals. For sure, I also joined the activity to watch and cheer for our Cardinals.

Hoping the miracle for Cardinals will happen this year again.

Let’s celebrate it in advance. Go~ Go~ Cardinals!

America Culture- Baseball

by Penny on October 18, 2012

in Extracurricular

This week, everybody on campus is talking about baseball, because the St. Louis Cardinals are playing to win the championship for the National League. In my opinion, baseball is a big part of American culture. People have so much passion about baseball, and they are willing to explain the American baseball rules to me.

But what’s the meaning of NLB, MLC, ALC, and WS? Do you get confused about American baseball terminology? I got confused when I arrived in St. Louis and watched a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium. Then, I learned baseball terminology from my friends.

For those who don’t know about American baseball, here is some basic knowledge about the American baseball game: In the United States, there are two leagues in Major League Baseball (MLB): one is the National League (NL), and another is the American League (AL). Each league sends 4 teams into the postseason. The Cardinals are one of the baseball teams in the National League.

The Cardinals won the World Series last year. Before gaining the World Series (WS), there are two rounds to determine which team will be the champion this year.

In the first round, it is called National league division series (NLDS) and American league division series (ALDS). The two winners from NLDS and ALDS go to the next round and the two losers go home.

The second round is called the League Champion Series (LCS). NLCS for national league champion series, ALCS for American League champion series, where the two remaining teams in each league play each other. If the Cardinals win this round, they will be the National League Champions. This is what the Cardinals are playing right now. That’s why St. Louis people are so excited now, because we are proud of our Cardinals, and we want to see them go to the World Series.

The last round is called the World Series (WS). When the two league champions play each other, the winner will be the World Series Champion.

The St. Louis Cardinals were the WS champions last year. I’m looking forward to hearing some good news from Cardinals this year. I’m hoping the Angry Bird (St. Louis Cardinals) can make the miracle happen again.

It’s that time of year again. October baseball! I wanted to begin this week’s blog with a few thoughts about my Redbirds. I am so proud of the way the Cardinals have played through the past two months, keeping their lead in the wildcard standings and getting a pretty good lead over the Nationals in the NLDS. I am not surprised however, for they are in the Wild Cards. Even Fontbonne seems to love the Cardinals as much as I do. Today, the game was featured on a network we do not receive, so they bought the game for a one-time fee and showed it in the AMC of Medaille. Sadly, I had class and could not go, but I made it for the last two innings. I will be watching the games the next couple days as always, so let’s go Cardinals!

The weeks here at Fontbonne just seem to get busier. I have a lot of projects to work on due in the next month and my school activities are picking up speed. As soon as I cross something of the to-do list, I think of another task to add. Even with all of this to do, I still love being here at Fontbonne. I cannot picture myself being anywhere else for my education. I don’t see things slowing down for me anytime soon because tomorrow is my first practice for Griffin Girls, the dance team at Fontbonne. I am both nervous and excited for this. Tryouts went really well, but when it comes to dance, taking a year off has left me out of shape, so I know I will be struggling to even move Friday morning. I’m looking forward to it though! I have dearly missed dance. I feel a like a happier person when I dance, and I am grateful Fontbonne gives me the opportunity to be part of such an amazing team. There are 16 wonderful dancers on the team this year, and I cannot wait to spend time with each and every one of them!

Until next week…

Thanks for reading!

Last week, I was hanging out with the Quidditch team (…yes, you read that right. There’s a new Quidditch team on campus, and since I didn’t get in on the action soon enough to be on the team, I’m just a Quidditch groupie now.) and they told me they’d be wearing their new jerseys on Monday to advertise their upcoming match against Webster. I don’t have a Quidditch jersey, but their jerseys look a lot like baseball shirts, with colored sleeves and a logo on the front, and it reminded me of my own Kansas City Royals baseball jersey. So on Monday, I dug my jersey out of the closet and wore it to school.

Look at me on a windowsill with Ryan Hall looming over me. This is how Royals fans roll.

Unbeknownst to me, there’s some real friction between Cardinals fans and Royals fans in Saint Louis. Monday morning, my fellow blogger Courtney caught a glimpse of  me in the library and followed me up the staircase to demand, “Why are you wearing a Royals jersey???” I could feel people giving me looks as I took my seat in my classes. Someone asked me if I’d been disowned by my family yet.  When we were planning for our booth at the upcoming Springfest event at the Math/Computer Science Club, it was agreed that we would all wear Cardinals shirts and I was specifically told not to wear my Royals jersey. When I’d pulled it out of the closet that morning, I’d had no idea people would be so irritated by it. I can only imagine what happens to people who wear Cubs shirts to class!

Spring Weather, Spring Training

by Conner March 9, 2012

I thought I would take this week’s blog to discuss this unbelievably warm weather we are experiencing at Fontbonne. The past couple weeks have been consistently and unusually warm. Spring is on its way and one can surely tell on campus. The dull mood that occurs between the holiday season and spring has been lifted. [...]

Game 7: I Was There.

by Courtney October 29, 2011

Since Thursday, my life has been a whirlwind.  I took my third cell biology test on Thursday afternoon, and then I attended the Big Fall Event on Thursday evening after my organic lab ended at 8:15.  I later went to bed around 11:30, and I had absolutely NO idea that I’d be one of the [...]

Going Back Home

by Elizabeth P. October 26, 2011

Going back home may be just to do laundry, visit with family, or just to see something familiar. Going home for me is all of those things. Last Saturday I took a few extra guests with me. I took three of my Fontbonne friends back to O’Fallon, Mo. You may be thinking “Where is that?” [...]

I have never been so glad to have not left St. Louis for college! I absolutely love living in Cardinal Nation! This has been one of THE most exciting Red Octobers we have had, and although we are behind in the World Series 3-2, I am still keeping the faith! We came back and got [...]

Rally Squirrel!

by Courtney October 18, 2011

With the Cardinals now officially participating in the World Series, it’s a great time to be a Saint Louisan.  All of my friends (and even my professors) are overly excited about tomorrow night’s Game 1. You may wonder why I’m blogging about the Cardinals.  After all, most of you probably know that I’m a theatre and [...]

I <3 St. Louis

by Elizabeth October 10, 2011

In the past few days, I’ve been loving the fact that I live in Saint Louis. Here’s why: 1.  It’s been 80+ degrees this whole week, and will stay like this for a few more days! Normally, I hate fall because I know that its dropping temps are just the beginning of the insufferable winter.  This [...]
