I don’t know about you guys, but I personally can’t envision my life without coffee…

It all started my sophomore year of college. I was an innocent to coffee back then, having only experienced various frou-frou “coffee” drinks here and there (no shame – I think all of us die-hards start out with a frappuccino or two). Tastes of my grandfather’s black coffee had made me screw up my face in distaste. However, I had to do SOMETHING to alleviate the exhaustion my 8 am classes wrought upon me. I don’t drink soda or energy drinks, so my caffeine options were somewhat limited – until one of my friends suggested the simplest of simple coffee drinks, a vanilla latte.

There was a Starbucks conveniently located in the building that housed my 8 am, so I thought, why not? After one particularly tiring session of class, I trudged downstairs to wait in line, somewhat nervous about ordering from the then-daunting menu. Grande? Venti? What??? I was so confused. But I managed to complete my order with no hitches, and before I knew it, I was the proud owner of a fresh Grande Vanilla Latte.

The first time I drank a latte, I did not have an epiphany. I remember being grateful for the energy rush and enjoying the taste, but I had no idea what that first step down the rabbit hole would bring. Now, I am a gold member at Starbucks until 2019, the owner of a Keurig, and a coffee scavenger – local coffee places are my favorite establishments. I enjoy my coffee dark and iced, with almond milk or half-and-half, and when I need that extra pick-me-up I go for cold brew or espresso shots. If I don’t have coffee, I get a caffeine headache – once, in Disney World, I thought I was dying of a migraine until I realized that it was 4 pm and I hadn’t had my fix. I drank a grande in about two minutes and felt like a new woman.

Could I have better habits? Yes. Could I have worse habits? Definitely! What are some of your favorite coffee-based drinks?

Maybe I’m broaching a subject that has already been done, or perhaps more than a bit stereotypical? But it’s near and dear to my heart. St. Louis offers up some awesome local coffee shops to fulfill the caffeine needs of any student. If you’re looking for something relatively close to Fontbonne I would have to recommend either Kaldi’s on Demun, just off Clayton Rd., or Foundation Grounds on Manchester, just off Big Bend. Both shops have great coffee, breakfast and lunch items, baked goods, and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for doing homework or hanging out with friends.

If you’re willing to explore the city a bit more, there are a few different neighborhoods with great shops. The Tower Grove neighborhood has Mokabe’s and the Gelateria on South Grand, Hartford Coffee House on Hartford St., and the lesser known, Sweet Art Bakery and Cafe (a personal favorite of mine) just north of Tower Grove Park on 39th St.

In the Delmar Loop neighborhood there’s Meshuggah Cafe and Blueprint Coffee. In the Central West End there’s the Coffee Cartel, Palate Coffee Bar, and Cafe Ventana. Also, in random places around the city, you have Park Avenue Coffee in Lafayette Square, Benton Park Cafe on Arsenal and Lemp, The Mud House on Cherokee Street, and Comet Coffee on Oakland. Each establishment has something a little different to offer its patrons. I would highly recommend taking some time out to try the different, local coffee shops that St. Louis has to offer.

Favorite Way to Study

It can be hard to study when all you want to do is go outside in the beautiful weather! While I do my best to find time for the things I love, when it comes to studying I find ways to relax and zen out (as best as I can) in the process of studying.

When I want to get in the studying “mood” I find a quiet spot at home with room to lay out my study materials. I get into comfy clothes, heat up a some water for tea and have a healthy snack before starting. I really enjoy any type of tea… trust me, there’s a tea out there for everyone! My current favorites are Trader Joe’s Herbal Fall Blend tea & Celestial Seasoning’s Tension Tamer tea. These teas both contain chammomile and other herbs that I find help promote relaxation. It’s currently midway through the semester, so things can get stressful! I choose herbal teas because they don’t contain caffiene. Caffiene works wonders for some, but for me personally I find if I drink too much of it, my heart starts racing and it becomes counterproductive to getting more work done. If you prefer the caffiene- try labels that say: black tea, oolong, green tea, and white tea and see what works best for you! Snacks that give me energy for studying include apples or carrots with peanut butter, avocado slices on toast and the protein pancakes from my previous blog post!
