Work Work Work

by Holly on December 9, 2013

in College Life

I work at Potbelly Sandwiches in downtown Clayton. I was so excited when the company finally expanded to St. Louis. Their food is DELICIOUS! But it comes with a price. Don’t ever work at your favorite restaurant, because you will get so tired of the food. And unfortunately, that has happened to me. And as a college student in an apartment, naturally making minimum wage isn’t quite cutting it. So. I am becoming a Certified Trainer, which will give me about a dollar raise, and from there I will become a Shift Lead making $11+ per hour. But there is one thing still on my mind: my job has absolutely nothing to do with my major. Even a job in retail would be more relevant to Advertising than food service is. And it’s not like I absolutely LOVE my job, so should I consider switching to something else? My dream job (for right now, until graduation) is to work at Crate and Barrel. And I think I am going to look into that. I guarantee I’d make more than minimum wage, and I’d be doing something I actually love: displays and looking at furniture all day. I haven’t been with Potbelly for too long, but what’s the harm in finding something better?

Failed Internship

by Holly on November 25, 2013

in College Life,In Saint Louis

As a first semester Freshman, I was so excited to get to have an opportunity for an internship. Yes, it was unpaid, but I figured it would really add to my resume. And I needed more things besides Taco Bell and Racanelli’s Pizzia. I needed something that actually applied to my degree, and this company wanted me to do some flyers and redesign their menu. That’s a big job, considering I am just an intern, one with little to no experience at that. So I emailed the company. No response. They took about 4 weeks to eventually get back to me. At that point, I had basically forgotten about the whole thing. But I was happy to hear from them. And we set up a meeting. It went very well, I said I’d love to join their team, and they seemed happy to have me. I told them I’d talk to my job and see when I could next be available, and I’d email them my schedule. And I did. That was about 2 weeks ago and I haven’t heard back. I got my excitement up too early, seeing that they wouldn’t even respond after meeting and bringing me on to join them. But, who knows. Maybe I’ll hear from them in a few weeks. To say the least, internships and the corporate world are tough. And maybe I’m still too young to be out there. I am only 18, and I have plenty of time to enjoy myself. All I did in high school was work, maybe I should look back and try not to do that to myself again in college. Free time or job experience? It’s a toss up.

Food With Love

by Holly on November 25, 2013

in Uncategorized

So several months ago, I joined this program with Goodies.co and Food With Love. Every month, for about $7, they send you a box of snacks. These are usually new products that are not yet sold in stores and they ask that you taste and review them. It’s fun! And honestly, the more I think about it, it is PERFECT for a college kid. A box of snacks for a really low price, AND it somewhat applies to my major. As an advertising major, we discuss in my Ad and Marketing classes the value of primary research. Which is, essentially, what these boxes obtain. We review the taste, uniqueness, packaging, and overall quality to give constructive feedback about these products. I enjoy it a lot and I think that shows that I picked the right major.

The Move-In

by Holly on November 25, 2013

in College Life,In Saint Louis

I’ve lived here about three weeks now, and I suppose I’ve gotten to know the apartment pretty well at this point.

Perks of living in a really old building:
-Lots of closet space
-Tall ceilings
-French details on the walls, trim, doors, framework.
-Mosaic tile in the hallways
-Hardwood floors
Not-so-perky things:
-Squeaky EVERYTHING. Floors, doors, cabinets…
-Sticky doors and crazy doorknobs
-Scary basement. Very scary.

But I love it. I love it so much. I have a cozy quiet (but squeaky) place to come home to. There was always noise at the dorms. ALWAYS. Any day of the week, any time of night. Ironically, it was quietest on the weekends. More and more people went home on the weekends as the semester went on. I love my new roomie and I absolutely love having actual furniture. I never want to leave!

The Hunt

by Holly October 23, 2013

And here, a few tales of the idiots that run apartment complexes: The High-Rise Guy: We went through the whole sha-bang: call up, set up an appointment, discuss pricing, etc. This place was in the Central West End. GORGEOUS view of the city. 10 stories up. TINY studio apartment (did I mention I’m having a [...]

The Search for an Apartment

by Holly October 23, 2013

It’s been a busy couple of weeks. I have been spending a lot of my time on a big change: finding an apartment. The campus life thing isn’t really working for me. The showers can’t decide if they want to be hot or cold. My room can’t either. There are only two temperatures here: Mr. [...]

So, this is my first post. I’ll introduce myself: My name is Holly Rogers. I am a freshman majoring in Advertising. I am from St. Charles, MO. And technically, I live on campus. But I feel like a commuter most days. Between 2 jobs and a boyfriend back where I live, I only sleep here [...]
