Huge, towering. Intimidating, for sure.

But Benjamin Ajak, a guest at one of the first dedicated semester events, was anything but (after you got to know him, of course!). His laugh was unexpectedly joyful and contagious–despite what he had been through as a “Lost Boy” in Sudan, wandering the land with thousands of other orphaned children.
Reading his book, “They Poured Fire On Us from the Sky,” and then hearing him speak and having a private lunch with him (with the rest of the SGA) was definitely one of the most powerful experiences I’ve had this semester. Ajak told us about his struggles as a kid, and his everyday struggle to stay alive. He grew up wandering the lands for a safe place to stay, finally ending up in a refugee camp. When he was a little older, he got the opportunity to come to America, where he lives now, traveling the 50 states as a truck driver (and inspirational speaker, like he was at Fontbonne).
I’ve been to a few other dedicated semester events, but getting to know Ben Ajak and seeing his powerful thirst for life first hand was definitely an inspiring experience!
